2016 Season
Mar 28, 2016, 11:15 am

BOMBA President

Paolo Mari

On behalf of the BOMBA Board of Directors I would like to welcome you to the 2016 baseball season.  For those of you who are new to BOMBA, welcome to our baseball family.

The upcoming season promises to be the largest in recent history with BOMBA’s registration increasing by approximately 40% from last year. This season we will have over 90 House League baseball teams.

Our Burlington Bulls REP division has also expanded with the addition of a second Junior Rookie Ball team and a 16U Bulls team competing in the newly created Baseball Ontario Elite Division.

BOMBA is also proud and excited to be entering into its fourth year of our Challenger Baseball program   Challenger is looking for volunteers to help the Challenger athletes during the season. If you, your player, or someone you know is interested in helping with Challenger Baseball please contact Kelly Scott at burlingtonchallenger@gmail.com

As President of BOMBA Baseball, I would like to personally invite you to Parents Night on April 14th at Mainway Auditorium. That night you will have the opportunity to meet BOMBA’s Board of Directors who will provide you with important information about the upcoming season, including the team formation process, uniform pick up and game scheduling. The information night will be divided into two sessions, with the entry level divisions of Blastball, T-Ball, and Soft Toss at 6:30pm and the intermediate and senior divisions of Grasshopper to Midget starting at 7:45pm.

Industry specialists from Corbett’s Source for Sports will be present with baseball equipment for purchase as well as Tyler Patzalek of Power Alley Baseball with information about summer training camps.

With the increased enrollment in 2016 BOMBA is seeking additional House League Team Sponsors. If you or your company would like to learn more about House LeagueTeam Sponsorship opportunities, please contact our Director of Sponsorships through the BOMBA office at 905-631-0211 or administrator@baseballburlington.com.

If you have volunteered to Coach or Assistant Coach a House League team in 2016, BOMBA will be hosting a police check night at Burloak Sports Centre on Wednesday, April 6th from 6pm – 8pm. All coaching volunteers must provide a police check, issued within the past two years. BOMBA will cover the cost of police checks conducted that evening.

Please keep the weekend of May 6th to 8th available for Baseball is Back – BOMBA’s official opening weekend!   Game schedules for this weekend will be distributed and posted on BOMBA’s website by May 1st. During this event, BOMBA will be hosting its first annual “Batting Out Hunger” Food Drive for the Salvation Army. Watch your e-mail for more information about this food drive in the next few weeks.

BOMBA’s Summer Camps will also return this year. The Burlington Summer Baseball Camps are driven by Power Alley Baseball led by Tyler Patzalek. In the coming weeks you will receive an email about the Summer Camps with instructions on how to register. We plan to build on the tremendously positive feedback from the 2015 summer camps and 2016 winter camps to provide a unique development environment for both House League and REP players.

If you are as anxious to get going as we are, this coming week, BOMBA is hosting DK Bats (dkbatcompany.com) who will provide a demo and instruction night(s) about wood bats, used in the Bantam and Midget divisions.   DK Bats will be at Burloak Sports Centre from 5pm – 7:30pm   Monday March 28th to Wednesday March 30th. Players that purchase a bat will be able to customize colours and have their name engraved on the bat. Everyone is welcome to drop by and learn about DK Bats’ products.

Check the BOMBA website www.baseballburlington.com regularly for information about the season and all of the upcoming season events.   The Events Calendar on the website is constantly updated with all of the latest information.

We are very excited about the 2016 season and hope that every athlete has a fantastic experience full of fun and development!

    • Hosted 8 tournaments including Junior Eliminations, Minor Rookie Ball COBA playoffs, Minor Bantam and Major Pee Wee provincial championship

The Objectives of Baseball Burlington

Last year the feedback from parents helped developed our 2014 plans:

    • Training and Development (HL and REP)
    • Batting Cages
    • Coach Selection
    • Improve REP tournament (more involvement from BOMBA and making them more events)
    • Season is too short
    • Coach Mentoring to ensure BOMBA standards are being met
    • Improved marketing of BOMBA

How did we do to these goals?

Quality of our Baseball Diamonds

  • We have increased our dialogue with the city and have built a positive relationship. However, we are still at the mercy of the city with the quality of our diamonds. We have been active participants in the several revitalization projects.
      • In September, the city begun revitalization of Ireland diamonds (D1 to D3). The project involves:

          • New fencing and netting
          • Relamping of D1 and D2
          • New player benches
      • Brant Hills revitalization will commence in October to May involving new fencing and for our Rookie Ball teams electrical power at Brant Hills A
      • Sherwood Forest park is in the early stages of revitalization discussion which will include the current 4 diamonds

High Performance Baseball

          • Increased the level of development of our players through the Bulls Winter Development Program, House League Program, Hitting Clinics, and Coaching Clinics
          • Created a partnership with Sports Specific Training (SST) in Burlington – discounted rates for all BOMBA players
          • We added a Bulls 3 team in Minor Mosquito, Major Mosquito, Major Pee Wee, and Major Bantam. These teams replaced the Select teams for 2015.

Coach Selection

          • Changed the process in coach selection for the 2015 season.
          • Interviewed all applicants
          • Standardized questions and format
          • Scorecard applicant on leadership, experience, technical ability, communication skills, and philosophy
          • The interview committee consisted of more than 1-2 people – involved 4-6 people

Improve the marketing of BOMBA

          • We continue to utilize our website and adapt our website for improved communication. Changed the layout of the website to condense the menu options for ease of navigation
          • We need to advance out use of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)
          • Created a separate website for the Burlington Bulls
          • We started to track how new participants to BOMBA heard of us. Greater than 70% had heard of us from an existing player or member. Our biggest marketing tool is the experience we bring and the resulting word of mouth advertising.

Team selection

          • Tryouts in September were changed to involve more independent evaluators. Many of these evaluators were other coaches, Board Members, graduated players, and past coaches.
          • Tryout hats and shirts were added to create a common platform for all players
          • Ratings and Rankings were discussed with the coaches prior to team selection and notification
          • House League teams were selected through the HL committee based on ratings to balance the teams
          • Each HL player from Grasshopper to Midget is now rated for effective team selection

2015 Objectives:

          • Continue to build infrastructure working with the city to build batting cages at Ireland
          • Making Ireland exclusive to BOMBA teams – partnering with other baseball organizations in Burlington such as GHBL and Vintage leagues
          • Midget Elite Team – decided not to field a Midget Elite team in 2015 in order to plan and execute it properly
          • Leverage the Bulls Pen for HL Development Program, Free HL Clinics with registration, Hitting Clinics, Catcher Clinics, Pitching Clinics, Drop-In times, summer indoor practices.
          • Expand Baseball’s Back as our official opening day
          • Continue to grow Select Baseball through our summer All Star tournament team

Overall, the state of baseball in Burlington is bright. We are growing, we are stressing grassroots development of coaches, players, and umpires, we are willing to change and challenge the norm of community based baseball.

2014 Season Opening
May 13, 2014, 2:05 pm

BOMBA President

Paolo Mari

For many of us the 2014 season has begun.  Over the winter months BOMBA has been focusing on providing development programs for our young athletes and ensuring that the 2014 season is event filled and fun.

We launched the BOMBA Baseball Academy with the Bulls Development Program and the House League Development Program.  BOMBA also offered hitting clinics and coach clinics as part of our development focus.

Development opportunities will continue in the summer months with the Blue Jays Instructional Clinic (June 14th) and the Burlington Bandits Camps (July 14th and 21st).

The return of Baseball is Back! on May 9th to 10th have a majority of our teams participating in exhibition games as our official Opening Day.  The day was also used for umpire development with many of our senior umpires mentoring our new and second year umpires.

In 2014, we launched Grasshopper baseball for 7 year old players.  Grasshopper is a progression to Rookie Ball utilizing a manual pitching machine.  We feel that Grasshopper will assist players in the transition to Rookie Ball.

The Board recently added Kurt Dobson as the Director, House League Development to advance our House League Development Plans.

The BOMBA Board of Directors is excited about the 2014 season and the increase in registration.  Overall, registration is higher than 2013 by 10% with House League registration higher by 17%.  BOMBA is now home to over 1,100 young athletes and 100 teams.

We thank all our volunteers and sponsors for making these successes possible!

On behalf of the Board, we all hope that you have a great season.  More to come!

Select Baseball

    • To advance the Burlington Bears we elected Jeff Brittain as Director of Select with the goal of reaching out to other associations to create a Select league (outside of Mississauga). We were successful in attracting between 4-6 associations joining the league at each level (Rookie Ball to Bantam).

    • We had 18 players and 20+ buddies playing baseball every Saturday morning from May to July.

    • Umpire Development

Growing baseball is not only for players it also relates to our umpires

    • In Burlington we have the privilege of some high profile umpires

      • Lisa Turbitt – represented Ontario at the Baseball Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec
      • Dave Margetts - represented Ontario at the Baseball Canada Midget Nationals in Trois Rivieres, Quebec doing plate at the Gold Medal game
      • Steven Jaschinski and Cody Bradt were invited to the Ontario Cup which is normally reserved for Level 3 umpires aspiring to attend the National Program
      • They were the two youngest umpires there and impressed all

Hope you all had a great season.  Looking forward to the 2014 season!  BOMBA continues to grow and continuously improve our organization and baseball in Burlington!
