Burlington Jr. Bulls Win BMBA Tournament in Brantford
May 25, 2015, 7:16 pm

This past weekend the Burlington Bulls Junior team took its 3-0 early season record into the BMBA Tournament in Brantford hosted by the hometown Braves. The Bulls drew the hosts in game 1 and were able to get past Brantford by a score of 14-4, led by a balances offensive attack and solid pitching. The next game was against conference rivals the Dundas Chiefs. The game was a close hard fought battle with the Bulls prevailing by a score of 5-3, again solid pitching by Justyn Gallant and Chris Dupuis locked down the victory. The Bulls were given a bye to the semi-final based on their preliminary record and would have to face a very strong Hamilton Cardinal team early Sunday morning. The game did not disappoint as the two teams went back and forth. The Bulls jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning before the Cardinals re-took the lead in the bottom of the second 3-2 as they took advantage of defensive miscues. The game remained that way as the pitching on both sides nullified all offence until the top of the seventh when Jake Gerovac drove in the tying run on a two out hit to right field scoring Greg Marco who one pitch before stole second base. Adam Odd came to bat and put the ball into right field driving in the go ahead run as Gerovac scored. Adam Odd also pitched 6 strong innings striking out 8 batters along the way. With the score 4-3 heading into the bottom half Game 1 winner Derek Zwolinski got the call to come in and close the game. Derek did just that retiring all three Cardinals in order ending the game with a 4-3 Bulls victory. The final was a battle with a familiar foe the Oakville A’s, last year’s COBA Champions and a perennially competitive team. The Bulls rolled Derek Zwolinski back to the mound for the start. The game was a back and forth affair as the lead changed three times in the first three innings. The Bulls were up 6-3 by the third inning and that is where the game ended as Derek Zwolinski went the distance helping the Bulls win the tournament championship and boosting their overall season record to 7-0. With two complete game wins and a save Derek Zwolinski was named the tournament MVP.
